" The painting does it, it just calms me down "
However, don’t be fooled by the often-worn flat cap and unassuming, grandfatherly appearance. In reality, Dave Coulter is a highly skilled painter. Without doubt, he is fiercely self-critical, highly informed about other painters, and absolutely committed to his art.
He was born and raised on the same street as Arthur Delaney, a family friend who would pop in regularly and through whom he met LS Lowry. He also talked art with Theodore Major. Through these meetings, his artistic sensibility developed.
So, although it’s mainly Dave Coulter’s more recent works that are exhibited, it’s fair to say that each of them has been 70 years in the making.
From his studio filled with the antique radiators he used to restore and paint, Dave Coulter now has the time to focus on his art.
Surrounded by canvasses and paints, he creates the evocative Manchester and Salford cityscapes that have brought him a legion of loyal admirers and collectors from far beyond the North West.
“ I’ve been going out for years
sketching and painting the city. ”

The work of Dave Coulter - A Manchester impressionist painter
There is nothing timid about Dave Coulter’s work. The minute you see it, you are pulled in to the picture by bold brushstrokes that seem to grab colour, light or dark.
The locations where he chooses to paint are immediately familiar to anyone who lives in the area – Manchester Central Library, the Refuge building, Peveril of the Peak, Salford Art Gallery, Deansgate… all these are sites he returns to again and again.
As an artist primarily working in Manchester and Salford, David Coulter is used to grey skies and rain. In fact, it’s an integral part of many of his paintings, the rain creating the blurred images and reflections that crop up again and again in his work.
While this is true, there is certainly nothing bleak about the pictures he creates – bold flashes of colour, often reds, yellow and blues, give them a vividness that keeps them in your mind’s eye long after you have turned away.

The Process
From initial sketches to finished work, Dave Coulter works fast and instinctively, the images he wants to capture moving quickly from eye to heart to hand to brush to canvas.
He has this in common with the impressionists, like them playing with colour, light and tonal values to create a painting of a world that you feel you could step into.
As an adept technician with a deep knowledge and understanding of other artists, he brings a lifetime of experience to bear in every brush stroke. So while he often revisits and repaints the same the same scene, each painting is different, the time of day revealing new colours and shadows.
